Andrew Craig on Why Every Brit Is 6x Poorer Than They Should Be | Part I

Britain's £20 Trillion Blind Spot: Andrew Craig on the Collapse of UK Capital Markets

In this episode of Trail Blazers, host Johnny sits down with Andrew Craig, an author, founder of Plain English Finance and a stockbroker of nearly three decades, for a wide-ranging conversation about how Britain quietly dismantled its own stock market, and why almost no one noticed.

Andrew lays out a startling case: thirty years ago, UK-listed companies made up 10% of global stock market value. Today that figure sits under 3%. The number of London-listed businesses has roughly halved and annual capital raised on the exchange has collapsed from tens of billions of pounds to a few hundred million. By Andrew's calculation, three decades of misguided pension and tax policy, spanning governments of every stripe, has cost Britain something in the region of £20 trillion in lost wealth creation or roughly £460,000 per working-age adult.

The conversation moves through the mechanics behind that decline, the mass exodus of UK pension money from domestic equities, the outsized influence of passive index funds and giants like Vanguard and BlackRock and what Andrew calls the "inelastic markets hypothesis". It's the idea that inflows into ETFs, not underlying business performance, are driving much of the value in America's largest companies. He connects this to Britain's world-leading science base in biotech and life sciences, arguing the country routinely fails to convert its own intellectual property, from DNA's discovery to breakthroughs in stem cells and AI, into home-grown, publicly listed wealth.

Along the way, Andrew and Johnny tackle wealth inequality, the difference between cash and equity, the Laffer curve, and a concrete policy proposal,. a government-seeded investment account for every British newborn, aimed at rebuilding the country's smaller-company ecosystem from the ground up.

This is part one of a two-part conversation. Part two is coming soon, subscribe so you don't miss it!
