By Andrew's calculation, three decades of misguided pension and tax policy, spanning governments of every stripe, has cost Britain something in the region of £20 trillion in lost wealth creation or roughly £460,000 per working-age adult.

The conversation moves through the mechanics behind that decline, the mass exodus of UK pension money from domestic equities, the outsized influence of passive index funds and giants like Vanguard and BlackRock and what Andrew calls the "inelastic markets hypothesis". It's the idea that inflows into ETFs, not underlying business performance, are driving much of the value in America's largest companies. He connects this to Britain's world-leading science base in biotech and life sciences, arguing the country routinely fails to convert its own intellectual property, from DNA's discovery to breakthroughs in stem cells and AI, into home-grown, publicly listed wealth.
